I smiled and said, "Really? That's so cool!"
She quickly corrected me, saying, "No, it isn't."
She tried to explain things as we were driving home, and that whole evening we sat in the living room, never moving from in front of the TV. My sister didn't go to soccer practice. All of us just sat there the whole night, trying to make sense of what we were seeing on the screen before us. It took me a while to realize that this was real- I'd heard all the stories of Pearl Harbor and all the wars that took place decades before, but I never fathomed that something like that would happen in my lifetime. Just like it was to every U.S. citizen, and to people all around the world, the 9/11 attacks were unreal to me.
We will never forget that day.

Never forget! God bless those who died on that tragic day.

ReplyDeleteNEVER FORGET~
It's so unfortunate, you, and so many others in your generation, have witnessed so many horrific events. I'll never forget, for example, the Oklahoma City bombing. I live in Oklahoma. I was a month away from giving birth to my third child. Fortunate enough to be a stay at home mom, with my two tiny ones and the one on the way, wow, that brought so much perspective. It was really strange. Although we had cable, I didn't ever watch tv. We had an extensive library of videos (back in the days before dvds! lol), because I didn't want my children seeing the violence, etc on tv. My father, in California, called me, and was just going on and on about what happened in OKC. I knew we were having stormy weather that day, so I thought a major tornado had come through or something. When I finally turned on the television, I just held my children, stunned and crying uncontrollably. I was just so thankful that my babies were safe at home with me. Horrid events like that... there is never any logical explanation. But I am thankful that most people are not so cruel and thoughtless. I remember my heart, swelling with pride, after 9/11, driving down the quiet street, and seeing a crane, raised to the fullest extent, displaying an American flag. It was so reassuring to be reminded that the majority of humans, be it Americans or otherwise, truly are good-hearted people, that love and respect human life. Sure reminds one of what we do have to be thankful for, and to treasure every moment we have with those we love.
